This is my second wind

I took the long way to get here.

I'm Dan McCaffrey. Dublin-born, Melbourne-based, and a coach mostly because it took me a long time to take myself seriously — so I know exactly what that costs.

I spent four years teaching in a secondary school, and I started coaching people online in 2020 while I was still in the classroom. Fat loss, habits, a handful of people — some of whom are still with me years later. Teaching taught me how to show up when the day isn't perfect: you're flat, nobody in the room wants to be there, and you do it anyway because someone's relying on you. It also taught me not to underestimate what one person can do to another person's standards.

I did the nutrition master's because the industry is full of fads and loud opinions, and I wanted to stand on evidence — so that when I'm questioned, I can go back to actual science instead of whatever I heard someone say. I also wanted to understand it properly, and the surest way to understand something is to have to teach it. That's why I'll always tell you why you're doing something rather than just hand you a plan. The teacher never left.

Then there were two years in construction. Decent money, wrong direction, and quietly hoping I'd be made redundant so I'd have no choice but to do this properly. I got my wish, and the last year forced the rest of it — my personal life changed shape, I broke both feet, and I lost my job inside a few months. The honest read is that I'd been hedging for a long time. That was my backstop: if I never really tried, it could never really be a failure.

I've also lost a serious amount of body fat more than once and put every bit of it back on, because I kept fixing the physique and never the habits underneath. Physical progress comes and goes. The mental progress is the part that holds.

So the people I want in front of me are the ones who've tried before and stopped — who know what they should be doing and keep sliding back into what they actually do. That gap isn't a training-split problem. It's a mirror problem: someone showing you honestly the difference between the person you say you're becoming and the person you're actually becoming. Everyone's so afraid of failing that almost nobody asks what happens if it works.

That's what Second Wind means. Not the perfect comeback story, and not a story without hurdles. It's deciding to take control and keep showing up regardless of what the day-to-day feedback says — trusting the process instead of fixating on one outcome, because what you're building is the person and the life around it, not a single number.

How I coach

Four pillars. Everything sits on one of them.

Get all four moving in roughly the right direction and the results take care of themselves. Neglect one and it will quietly undo the other three.

Training

Hard enough to change you, repeatable enough to keep doing.

  • Built around the days you actually have, not the days you wish you had
  • Every block has a target — stronger, faster, a bigger engine, or ready for a specific race
  • You'll know why a movement is in there, and whether last month actually worked

Nutrition

Evidence over fads. Enough structure to work, enough room to live.

  • No banned foods, and I won't take your carbs off you — they fuel the sessions doing the work
  • Consistently good beats occasionally perfect. Three brutal days undone by four loose ones is a surplus and the misery
  • Alcohol gets counted honestly, because it's usually what's quietly ending your week

Lifestyle

What happens around the session decides how well the session works.

  • Sleep, steps, alcohol and stress — where most stalls actually come from
  • The plan bends around shift work, travel, kids and a heavy week
  • It has to fit a life you like. Enjoy the holiday — something you hate won't survive one

Mindset

The part that holds when physical progress swings.

  • I'm the accountability at the start, until the habits are yours and you don't need chasing
  • An honest look at the gap between what you say you'll do and what you actually do
  • Missing a session isn't failure. Not coming back is

Their second wind

They didn't think they could either.

Real clients, in their words. Some are still with me years later.

25kg+ lost
Kevin Byrne
Fat loss · 1 year

Huge physical improvements. Going from doing no exercise to being genuinely annoyed when I miss a session — Dan makes it habit. The coaching is very friendly and accommodating but knows when to push you and demand more.

2km to a half marathon
Paddy Holland
Running · 12 weeks

From barely being able to run 2km at race pace to running a half marathon at 4:35 pace in 12 weeks. My VO2 max climbed drastically. You had literally been in my shoes before and knew so much in relation to prep — it made everything so much easier.

Went from dreading runs to loving them
Simon Bell
Running · 8–12 months

I ACTUALLY enjoy running. My taste palate has changed, my partner now joins me on runs, I have more energy and confidence. Overall lifestyle changed for the better — it had a waterfall effect on so many other aspects of my life.

Two years of progress without burnout
Sean Melia
Fat loss · 2 years+

Consistent, motivating, and results-driven. He strikes a great balance between pushing me when needed and adjusting sessions based on how I'm feeling — keeping me progressing without burnout. I feel much more confident in myself.

First HYROX completed
Aaron Cooley
HYROX · 5–6 weeks

The best training experience I've had to date — 100%. Supportive but demanding, completely tailored to my goal. It gave me the confidence to show up on race day knowing I was ready. There is literally no downside, so go for it.

Stronger, and finally likes running
Luke M.
Fat loss + running · 3 years

I used to hate running but now I love it because Dan has made it manageable and enjoyable. I've become stronger, I like the way my body looks, and I feel more confident. I haven't looked back since.

Know your numbers.

Not ready for coaching? No problem. Two calculators I built for my own clients — free, no email required.

Required pace per km
Per mile
Speed
Halfway split

Estimates only — the calorie figures use the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is a starting point, not a prescription. Your real numbers come from tracking what actually happens over a few weeks. Want them tailored properly?

A number on its own doesn't change anything.

Leave your email and I'll send you the short version of what to actually do with it — how to eat around that figure without tracking every gram, and how to tell in three weeks whether it's working.
